So, what is Serenitas? Serenitas is a Latin word used to describe fine weather and favorable conditions. In my work with clients of diverse backgrounds I've found that distress is almost always described in metaphors pertaining to weather; raging storms, cloudy skies, drowning in a rough ocean and gloomy days to name a few. Hence, Serenitas Mental Health Services was conceptualized as a way to use my clinical training and evidence based practice to assist those in distress and provide them with the necessary tools to function and fair better in their daily lives. The goal isn’t about “fixing” individuals, but instead helping to create fine/favorable conditions wherein they are able to regain functioning and take control of their lives. As a clinical therapist, I have seen firsthand how validating and working from a strengths based perspective supports clients and changes the narrative, fostering a more positive and healthy outlook as it helps to restore balance and empowers clients to be their best selves.
Serenitas Mental Health will be a private practice offering individual and group psychotherapy to adolescents and young adults and a ‘Healing Circle’ for survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence. The social media page however, will be dedicated to raising awareness on mental health issues and providing psychoeducation aimed at promoting mental wellness in Trinidad & Tobago. Various issues such as trauma, attachment, domestic and intimate partner violence, suicide, substance abuse and addiction, depression and anxiety, guilt and shame and many other topics will be explored, as well as the best evidence-based interventions to treat with some of these issues. Mental health professionals working in the field will also be on hand to join the conversation and chime in on what they have observed in their work with diverse populations.
So, get ready to ask questions and engage with us through this blog and our different social media platforms, as we strive to bring the issue of mental health and mental wellness in Trinidad & Tobago to the forefront.
Thank you for being a part of this journey!
